Ehrlichia
What is Ehrlichia?
Ehrlichiosis is caused by a rickettsial
organism called Ehrlichia canis and is transmitted by tick
bites. There are other types of Ehrlichia that have also
been implicated in this disease. Ehrlichiosis has been
reported in 34 states, with the northern states being spared
in most instances.
What are the symptoms of Ehrlichiosis?
Most dogs infected with Ehrlichia will be
lethargic, lose weight, show less interest in food and
become anemic. They can have bleeding problems, muscle or
joint pain, or neurological problems. There is also a
chronic form that can occur if the acute problem is not
treated. In this case the dog may appear to be normal or may
show vague signs of illness, just "not doing right." Chronic
illness can suddenly become very severe if the dog is
stressed.
How is Ehrlichiosis diagnosed?
Ehrlichia infection can be difficult to
diagnose due to the wide range of symptoms. The best method
of diagnosing this disease is through blood tests coupled
with the presence of clinical signs. Your veterinarian will
work with you and discuss the best blood tests for your pet.
How is Ehrlichiosis treated?
Ehrlichia canis is normally sensitive to long
term treatment with antibiotics. Extensive supportive care
may be necessary to treat some dogs with this problem.
The best prevention for Ehrlichia is to
control ticks on your pet. There are many types of products
available for tick control and your veterinarian would be
the best person to consult on which product would be
suitable for your pet.
